Two Possibly Suspendable Hits: Same Player, Same Game

Nick Folingo of the Ottawa Senators delivered two hits during the game against the Canucks on Friday. Both may merit another video from Shanahan and a possible suspension for either or both.

The first came against Cody Hodgson.

The second was on Ryan Kessler.

The Hodgson play. I don't think this is a suspendable play. Yes, there was an injury. Luckily, Vancouver Coach Alain Vigneault said he was fine and that he could have returned, but the doctors urged caution. But it appears that Hodgson adjusted his course just before the impact AND Foligno did not appear to finish his check. In fact, he appeared to minimize his contact given that neither player went into the boards. Plus, it looks like Hodgson may have even slipped just before the hit causing the impact to be to the head whereas Hodgson's actions alone would not have created a head shot. No penalty was called which definately helps Foligno's case.

The Kessler play. Again, no suspension in my opinion. There were penalties though. A two-minute for boarding and a misconduct. Kessler was also down before the impact. However, the hit did not target the head. Yes, there was some contact, but the force was not great enough to even send Kessler's head into the boards despite him being pinned against it. Also, there was no apparent injury on the play.

I'd wager no suspensions from the NHL on these issues. The Senators play again on Tuesday against the Sabers, so we should know something by the end of today or first thing tomorrow.
